Thrips damage plants by puncturing the outer layer and sucking out cell contents, resulting in a discolored (often silver-coloured) leaf surface. Thrips prefer to feed on young leaves which can result in the malformation. Because they damage plant tissue, they play an important role as a vector of plant diseases. On this page you can find the most common species of thrips.

Mites are small spiderlike creatures which feed on plant tissue and sap, which causes the plant to wither.

A common type is the bean spider mite (Tetranychus urticae) or red spider mites, which not only affects green beans, but also include peppers, cucumber, strawberry, apple, passion flower, pear and plum.

Whiteflies feed on plant sap and produce honeydew which in turn creates mold and attracts ants. The leaves wither and become damaged.

Aphids (Aphidoidea) are small herbivorous insects, which with stabbing and sucking mouthparts (stylets) passively feed on sap from the phloem.

Mealybugs are soft, wax-covered insects that cause significant economic damage in indoor gardens and glasshouses and often cause problems on indoor plants. Many mealybug species can easily be identified by the cottony-like material that they produce to deposit their eggs in. Some species however, do not produce these cottony egg sacks and instead, these eggs hatch immediatly when deposited. Most mealybugs infest above-ground parts of plants, but some species solely live on roots.

Soft-Scale insects

Soft-scale insects are sap sucking insects that can be characterized by their protective shield. Soft-scale insects are mostly discovered by the sticky-substance that they excrete, which is called honeydew. Ants love honeydew and are therefore mostly present at infested plants.

Hard-Scale Insects

Hard-scale insects are characterized by their (mostly) flat protective covering. They are largely immobile with the exception of the first stage of their lives when they are searching for suitable plant material. Heavily infested plants may appear weak or turn yellow.

Some cockroach species can multiply fast and can also quickly spread bacteria and fungi.
