Cryptolaemus montrouzieri |
|
| Natural enemy of |
Mealybugs |
| Origin | : | Australasia |
| Habitus |
| The adult Crypyolaemus is 3-4 mm. big, has a black body, with orange-brown head. The larve looks like a mealybug withe the same waxy filaments. But they move faster and if they are bigger the difference is easy to see. |
| Biology |
| Cryptolaemus prefers to deposit theire eggs (1-5 at a time) in the egg-sac of mealybugs. But the also prey on soft- and hard-scales. The young larve start feeding those eggs (after about a week), They can eat up to 200-300 mealybugs. After about 4 weeks they pupate. The total developmental time to adult is 4-6 weeks. They can lay up to 400 eggs. |
| Use |
| CML can be used against al kinds of mealybugs. They are not selective in their prey. Because they prefer oviposition in egg-masses of mealybugs, control of Longispinus mealybug is more difficult (they dont have eggs). An alternative is the introduction of CML-larvae. The CML-blisters should be hanged near and under the population of mealybugs, because Cryptolaemus easely fly away, when there is not a quick meeting with mealybugs. |
| The use of CML can be combined with that of : ACS,APS,AFS,GLS,LAS,LDS |
